Stand-alone IMT CT3 (IMY3) programmes
A pilot recruitment process for stand-alone Internal Medicine Year 3 programmes in Scotland and the West Midlands will be launching for posts starting from August 2025.
These programmes are aimed at doctors who already have the experience and capability to the level required for completion of IMY2, and would benefit from a structured training programme to gain the full Internal Medicine Stage 1 curriculum requirements. This will help with eligibility for Group 1 higher specialty training programmes; doctors who feel that they already have attained the full Internal Medicine Stage 1 curriculum requirements, are encouraged to apply directly to higher specialty training programmes.
Applications will be open from mid-November to early December. Full details will be added to the IMY3 section of the IMT Recruitment website and the person specification will be published by the end of September.
A decision on recruitment to IMY3 posts for future years will be made next year.
Eligibility
The person specification for IMY3 will be published by September and the key requirements include:
· Attainment of IMY2 capability by the application closing date. Demonstrated either by an ARCP from CT2 level training in internal medicine, or by using the Group 2 alternative certificate of core capability.
· This includes the curricular requirements (page 34) for:
o Geriatric medicine - 4-month attachment to a team led by a consultant geriatrician.
o Critical care - minimum 3-months’ experience in an intensive care unit or medical high dependency unit where the trainee is fully integrated within all aspects of the ICU / HDU team’s work, including the delivery of out of hours care. Experience should be attained in no more than two separate blocks.
· Full MRCP(UK) by the first offers date for the round of recruitment (April 2025).
· Not currently employed in an IMT or ACCS internal medicine programme – whilst it is permissible for those who have previously undertaken UK core training and wish to return to complete the IM Stage 1 curriculum to apply, it is not a route to changing posts for current trainees in these programmes. Doctors wishing to change their region should apply via the Inter-Deanery Transfer (IDT) process.
Assessment
Assessment will be carried out via the following methods:
- Shortlisting – this will be via the same verified self-assessment process utilised for higher physician trainin
- Interview - a structured two station interview for those shortlisted.
