East Midlands Enhancing Generalist Skills Programme and IMT

The East Midlands are excited to offer an innovative programme for a select number of IMT1 trainees starting in August 2022. Trainees will be able to undertake the ‘Enhancing Generalist Skills Programme: Leadership and Social Medicine’ alongside Internal Medicine Training, receiving specialist training in areas such as health inequalities and public health. They will then have the unique opportunity to spend time as a hospital doctor in the community, working with local organisations to tackle health inequalities and make tangible changes for the local community. Trainees will have protected time for the ‘Enhance’ program and will be paid for their time on the program.

This unique training program, combining the ‘Enhance’ programme with Internal Medical Training, will be available to all IMT candidates to consider when they choose their programme preferences. The programme options will be clearly indicated and those interested in the programme should rank it in their preferences, alongside the other programmes available. Programmes will be allocated, as per all others, on the basis of rank and preference.

The posts will be including a block at a new base Trust for the region, Derbyshire Community Health Services, which will offer a greater breadth of experience than in conventional secondary care. The IMT doctors undertaking this program will also be supported in helping to pilot and scope additional learning materials and experiences over their IMT time, including in third sector or non-NHS organisations supporting our population's most in need groups.
